Spring in Chaparral Park–Baby geese are on the way

I took a short bike ride this morning down the Indian Bend Wash path and and then doubled back through Chaparral Park this morning, stopping by the bird island on the south end of the park. It’s spring, and was hoping to see if there were any baby geese or ducks around.

I spotted several eggs out on the island (circled in red). Yes, they are really lying out there in the open.

And, in a few days, or maybe a little longer, they’ll be hatching and looking like this:

These three baby geese (goslings) from last year were adorable, and definitely drew a crowd.

There’s parking on the east side of the lake, when you enter from Chaparral Road. Otherwise, you can enter further north on Jackrabbit, park, and then walk south to the lake.

Scottsdale–Land of the Beautiful Sunsets

Caught this beautiful sunset a couple nights ago down off the boat ramp Camelback Lake on the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and McCormick Parkway.

As a friend reminded me last night, we live in the land of beautiful sunsets. I agree!

The Heron Have Landed in Scottsdale

We have gorgeous weather in Scottsdale, and the white heron obviously agree. Yesterday morning was a bit cooler than usual, about 41° F, and the McCormick Ranch Golf Course lakes were steaming. I wondered down with my camera, and as I came over the crest of the hill, it was really clear that the heron have landed. They seem to be here pretty much year-round, but rarely have I seen the flock so big.

Gorgeous birds, aren’t they? And a lovely sunrise, too.

Arizona turns 100 years old tomorrow, February 14th.

Today, I took a class on 100 years of Arizona history. Learned a lot of interesting facts about the state I call home.

And heard this song, called "I Love You, Arizona" by Rex Allen Jr., for the first time.

Beautiful song. Beautiful state.

Saturday Solitude in Scottsdale

The sun was almost setting this afternoon and I slipped out to catch a few photos in that lovely golden light.

My favorite is a this peaceful view of the McDowell Mountains, taken from the McCormick Ranch Golf Course.

Feels like spring, even though it still looks a bit like fall.
