Buyers Ask: Where is the closest hospital in Scottsdale?

by Dru Bloomfield on April 13, 2008

I spent some extra time with my dad this past week while he had an out-patient surgery and his follow-up appointment.  All went smoothly, and he’s recovering quickly.  My mom has been to the emergency room a couple times this year too, so I’ve been getting acquainted with hospitals and healthcare in Scottsdale.

While sitting in the waiting room, I was reminded that I live in an area that people often retire too, and one of the questions frequently asked is: “How close is this home to the hospital?”  For some buyers, especially with health issues, this is a critical question, and definitely has an impact on where they choose to live.

The city has several hospitals, numerous out-patient surgery centers (like the one my dad went to), and many, many health professionals.

Scottsdale Healthcare has three hospitals in Scottsdale, located in the South, Shea, and Greyhawk areas of town.

In addition, the Mayo Clinic and Hospital are also located in the Scottsdale area.

  • Mayo Clinic – Located at 134th Street and Shea Boulevard, very close to the Scottsdale and Fountain Hills boundary.
  • Mayo Clinic Hospital – 5777 East Mayo Boulevard is located in Northeast Phoenix very close to the Scottsdale city limits.

I’ve had neighbors and clients both tell me about their experiences with the Mayo Clinic, both here and at the other locations in other parts of the country.  Some neighbors, who live here part-time, scheduled their doctors visits during the winter, so they have access to medical specialists that are not available in their home towns.

Below you’ll see a Google map I’ve put together, so you can find the locations of these hospitals, relative to where you are thinking about purchasing or leasing.  If you have any experiences, updates, or additions, please let me know.  While I’ve been spending a bit more time in the hospital setting, I have no first hand experience and would welcome some feedback.

I’ve volunteered at Scottsdale Healthcare on Osborn for nearly 5 years (Stop by the Information Desk on Tuesday evenings and say “Hi”) and it is not uncommon for people to remark about how pleased they are with the care they received.

Of course, we also occasionally get requests for the phone number to the Patient Advocate when a family member is not happy with the care. It’s cool that they have a Patient Advocate to help take care of those problems.

I had outpatient knee surgery at the Greenbaum Surgery Center (a few doors down from Scottsdale Healthcare on Osborn) and was happy with the efficiency and professionalism of the place.

I think with Scottsdale Healthcare and Mayo, Scottsdale has phenomenal heath care available.

I just remembered, I recently had a Canadian client who scheduled a special comprehensive physical evaluation at Mayo during their vacation in Scottsdale.

John, My dad’s surgery was at Greenbaum, and I agree. Very professional, and also more relaxed than the typical hospital setting.
