Last night, I got a phone call from a friend telling me I need to check out the news, that Scottsdale’s drinking water was not safe. As I drove into my neighborhood, the guard told me that our community’s water was not safe to drink, and that he’d heard it on the news.
Knowing that there are a number of private water companies around the metro Phoenix area, I was skeptical, and rightly so.
The City of Scottsdale’s water, which serves, by far, the majority of the city, is safe.
From the city’s web site:
Water quality reports involve private company, not Scottsdale system
Some media reports this morning questioned the safety of Scottsdale water based on statements made Thursday at a community meeting hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency concerning the North Indian Bend Wash Superfund site.
The issue is related to a water treatment facility operated by the Arizona American Water Company, a private utility that provides water to customers in Paradise Valley and a portion of the city of Scottsdale with roughly 1,500 customers.
And, from the Arizona American Water press release on their web site:
Paradise Valley and Some Scottsdale Water Users Urged to use Caution
(Paradise Valley, AZ – January 16, 2008) – Arizona American Water notified 4,751 businesses and households in the Paradise Valley and North Scottsdale area today not to drink tap water until 5 p.m. Friday. ….
